Jean-Claude Van Damme to Play Hercule Poirot?
April 1, 2011
Jean-Claude Van Damme seems to be stepping out of the ring for his next film. It is rumored that the 50-year-old "Muscles from Brussels" might be portraying the role of Hercule Poirot.
Poirot, the lovable Belgian detective, appears in 33 Agatha Christie novels and 51 short stories, which were all published between 1920 and 1975.
According to LoveFilm.com, the unusual casting has to do with a new film-funding legislation of the European Film Diversity Act. To qualify for a funding, any production must feature a proportional representation of nationals from across Europe to reflect the continentís diversity.
"These rules have been foisted upon filmmakers who desperately need the funding," explains writer and producer Lord Horsham. "Where the UK Film Council was a layer of strategic glue that helped bind the many parts of our disparate industry together, the EFDA is a hammer which will shatter it apart."
Deadline announced earlier this week that Jennifer Garner is set to play Agatha Christie's other famous detective, Miss Marple. This too can be qualified as an unusual casting decision, since Miss Marple is an elderly lady, unlike Garner, who is 38.
