Van Damme in substance abuse treatment program

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- Belgian action actor Jean-Claude Van Damme is being treated for substance abuse.

His publicist confirms that Van Damme is in a program at Daniel Freeman Hospital in the Los Angeles County suburb of Marina delRey.

The star of Universal Soldier and Death Warrant checked himself into the hospital's 30-day treatment program on Saturday.

Van Damme is 35. He was born in Brussels and started studying martial arts when he was eleven. He became a middleweight champion as a teen-ager.
